Des Moines Metro Opera advertises its 2nd Stages Series as “operatic presentations in unorthodox spaces.” How fitting that this year’s production of Galileo Galilei, an avant-garde opera by Philip Glass about the visionary’s trial under Pope Paul V (1552–1621), take place at the Science Center of Iowa.
One thing I love about performing newer music is that I often have a personal connection to the piece. Mark Crayton, one of my professors at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, was the first Cardinal/Inquisitor/Oracle in the 2002 world premiere. I am looking forward to making Mark proud and sharing new memories about this piece.
Look for more thoughts and reflections from sharing the message in the music.
